Overview

Welcome to the Classic Bhutan Tour, an 8-day journey that begins in Kathmandu and ends in the picturesque valley of Paro. This carefully crafted itinerary offers an intimate encounter with Bhutan’s timeless culture, taking you through ancient dzongs, colorful festivals, and serene valleys where tradition and nature harmonize. Designed for easy pacing, the tour allows you to immerse yourself in the spiritual and architectural wonders of the Himalayan kingdom, all while respecting the principles of sustainable tourism and the nation’s unique Sustainable Development Fee.

From the moment you arrive in Paro, your licensed local guide will welcome you into a world where every dzong tells a story and every festival is a living prayer. You will explore the majestic Rinpung Dzong, walk the halls of the National Memorial Chorten in Thimphu, and witness the graceful rhythm of monks in prayer. Depending on the season, your itinerary may align with one of Bhutan’s revered tshechus, where masked dances and vibrant costumes transform monastery courtyards into stages of living faith. Each step is guided by our deep respect for Bhutanese customs, ensuring you travel with awareness and appreciation.

For those seeking to extend their Himalayan adventure, we highly recommend pairing this tour with nearby explorations in Nepal. Consider adding a few days to visit Chitwan National Park for wildlife safaris or the tranquil lakeside town of Pokhara, where you can enjoy panoramic mountain views and gentle treks. These complementary destinations enrich your overall experience without compromising the cultural depth of your Bhutanese journey.

Day-by-day itinerary

Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, you step into the crisp mountain air and are warmly greeted by your licensed Bhutanese guide. After clearing customs, you embark on a scenic 1.5-hour drive to the capital city of Thimphu. The road winds through the picturesque Paro Valley before climbing gently over hillsides, offering your first glimpses of Bhutan’s terraced fields and traditional farmhouses. Along the way, you pause at the historic Tachog Lhakhang, an iron chain bridge believed to have been built by the revered saint Thangtong Gyalpo in the 15th century. This short stop provides a wonderful introduction to Bhutan’s engineering heritage and spiritual artistry. Arriving in Thimphu, you immediately notice the capital’s unique charm—a city without traffic lights, where traditional dzong architecture blends seamlessly with modern life. Your guide shares insights into daily Bhutanese customs as you check into your hotel. The afternoon is free to acclimatize and begin absorbing the gentle rhythm of the valley. In the evening, you might enjoy a leisurely stroll through the town center, where prayer flags flutter and the distant sound of monastic chants sets a serene tone for the days ahead. This first day is intentionally unhurried, allowing you to settle in and prepare for the cultural treasures that await.
